The challenge: design an experience highlighting color in cinema, by utilizing a color palette inspired by my favorite film.
Mulholland Drive, David Lynch’s enigmatic cult masterpiece, has long fascinated and confused movie lovers. Google “Mulholland Drive explained” and you’ll find countless articles, posts and videos attempting to solve the mystery. But even if you subscribe to a particular theory, it can never fully explain this wild cinematic ride, and that’s the charm of it. The process of attempting to figure out Mulholland Drive is its own weird reward.
This is a set-building board game for devout Mulholland Drive fans—players must combine David Lynch’s official clues with elements from the film (objects, places, characters) that relate to them.
Inspired by the film’s use of red curtains and blue objects to signify mystery and unreality, I created a palette along a red-blue spectrum, and paired colors of close values to create a slightly disorienting, surreal effect.
